Matthew Hickey, of Verplanck, was killed while driving riding a 2016 Kawasaki motorcycle east on Kings Ferry Road in Montrose, a hamlet of Cortlandt, around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, during a crash with another vehicle, said New York State Police Trooper AJ Hicks.
The crash occurred when a 32-year-old Cortlandt woman, driving a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Kings Ferry Road, turned left onto Hunt Avenue, but she did not see Hickey, Hicks said.
It appears Hickey laid the bike down in an attempt to avoid the collision, but was struck by the Grand Cherokee, according to state police.
Hickey, a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School and a member of Local 580 Ironworkers union in New York City, is survived by his parents, James P. Hickey and his wife Mary; mother, Terri Marafioti Hickey; “The Love of His Life,” Angela Flynn, and his sisters, Chelsea Hickey, Kylie Hickey and Bianca DeCrenza. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A wake will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 170 Kings Ferry Road in Montrose. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, at St. Patrick's Church, 240 Eleventh St. in Verplanck, followed by burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
